Feeling Awesome.

I’ve gone quiet the last little bit due to the amount of work and life I’ve had going on. I’ll try and do better.

As part of an ongoing series on Vancouver is Awesome I was recently profiled as one of the city’s many talented creatives. You can read the story here!

There are no words to describe how excited and proud I am to have been recognized and showcased. Honestly! Thanks so much to Amanda Smith from Domain 7 for the mention!

2012 promises to be an amazing year already!

Valentine Parade.

Geronimo Balloons Valentine’s Day from hak lonh on Vimeo.

I would love to have big, gorgeous heart balloons delivered to me on Valentine’s Day. Not that I’m hinting at anything, of course.

If you’re living in LA, you might just see a few of ‘em paraded around by the glittery Jihan of Geronimo Balloons as she’s making these colourful deliveries.

Animalia.

If you’ve been following my card line you’ll know that I’m a tad animal obsessed, with only more plans to add to that illustrated-animal family over the next year. Exciting plans in 2012, overall.

Well, imagine my delight when I found this fabulously new curated shop devoted solely to animal-inspired art and more, called Animalia.

R.S. Posnak and I could be fast friends, I think. Her life-long love for animals inspired this online shop and I’m thrilled to see it exists, both from a creative standpoint but also because 10% of every sale made will be donated to Wildlife Conservation. That’s to be admired and celebrated, for sure.

I’m proud to say a few of my own cards have found their way to the Animalia shop and I’m definitely in great company. Take a browse and help our cute animal friends out, won’t you?

Hot One Inch Action.

How can I explain Hot One Inch Action, except to say that it is a crazy social evening with perfect strangers discussing the trading value and the artistry found in every 1″ button. Jim Hoehnle and Chris Bentzen conceived the idea in 2004 and have hosted the show annually ever since.

This is how they describe the evening: “The tiny art of fifty different artists is reproduced on one inch buttons. These one inch buttons are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy randomly selected buttons in mixed bags of five for $5. Didn’t get the button you want? Trade with the people around you…”

Sounds fun, right? It is!! And I’m thrilled to be one of the lucky 50 artists profiled in this year’s show!

If you’re in Vancouver, make sure you drop by Gallery Gachet this Saturday November 26th, 2011 between 8pm-11pm for some serious trading action!

Location:
Gallery Gachet
88 East Cordova Street,
Vancouver, BC V6A 1K3

Got Craft?!

I’ve been rather quiet on the blog recently and for that I apologize. I suppose part of my silence has had to do with my trying to figure out what this blog would become for me. I’m very happy to share and chat about all that inspires me, but due to my busy-ness the last little bit I haven’t had to the same kind of time to scour the web for grand design inspiration.

As my card business is expanding overall, I thought I might devote this blog to my progress and success, along with inspiration. Not a far stretch from my previous posts, but I’m hoping to place more emphasis on my evolution as a card designer.

Speaking of which…I’m proud to announce that on December 4th, I’ll be a first-time exhibitor at Vancouver’s favourite indie holiday show, Got Craft?. I’m very excited about this new phase in my professional life but also quite nervous – seeing this will be my first time on the other side of the table! Gah! I’ll be selling cards for all occasions, including Christmas and larger art prints.

Wish me luck. Hope to see you there!

The above postcard art was designed/illustrated by The Beautiful Project.

Inspired: Abigail Ahern.

Who doesn’t want a bit of kitsch in their life?

I saw these porcelain dog lamps the other day and couldn’t help but want one for my apartment. These sleek-retro-feeling pooches were created by London-based interior designer Abigail Ahern. Abigail’s sense of style paired with her rich sense of humour makes me think she’ll be the designer I call when it’s time to decorate my dream apartment.

Indie Love. Poppytalk Handmade.

Over the last couple of months I have received much positive attention for my latest card series. It gives me much encouragement to continue to dream up new characters and their well-suited colour palettes.

In my last post I mentioned my cards being showcased on PoppytalkHandmade’s latest curated online market, ‘Indie Love’. Like always, accompanying this month’s online market is a happy 56-page lookbook. Every page highlighting several of us indie artists around the world. I’m excited to be in such talented company. Make sure to take your time and pour over every page. Thanks so much for your support and please remember to help promote us indie-artist types too!

It’s all about that indie love, after all?

Artists shown above (in order): Pumphouse Studios, Mahogany Blu Design, You Sentimental Idiot, Augenblick Photo, Etincelle Creative Studio, Ruby Press, Dorothy Jeanne, Creative Thursday, Untold Imprint, Mélanie Kimmett, Acorn and Archer, Hold, Silver Pebble, Sweet Harvey, Sweet Spot Card Shop.

My animal note cards.

My latest card artwork has been up and selling on Etsy for a little while now. I’m also very excited to share I’m being showcased on Poppytalk Handmade’s online market this month.

These particular cards were created with Autumnal and Winter tones in mind. I’m now currently working on my Christmas line so be sure to keep checking the shop.

As always, let me know if you have any personal requests.

David Burton.

A LOOONG time ago I had thought about becoming a fashion photographer…there was something so appealing and luxurious about it. And I wasn’t too bad with a camera either. Sometimes I wonder what that alternate life would have been like but I’m very quick to remember that the graphic design direction I took was in fact the right one.

Forever admiring the fashion photographers of today and yesterday is where I’m happy to remain. After all, there is certainly no shortage of inspiration to be found there. And David Burton is one of those photographers I’ve definitely come to know and love over the years. Just these shots here make a drenched downpour (similar to what we experienced today) look inviting and loads of fun!

Antler no.6986.

How magical is this!? I need to have it. You can buy the print from photographer Kari Herer here. Although, I’m thinking I’d like to have the actual piece hanging from my wall.
